Good question Spenc.
When I build I think in layers.  In this case, I would first consider the sequence of steps necessary to get the results I want.

Action: top menu go to Insert/Shape/Square.  Create the size, location and colour of the square. Now insert your text box.  Adjust the Square to compliment your text box size and its background colour.  Access the Text Box or Spuare by clicking on it once and then selecting changes in the Editor box.

If you selected the Square after your Text Box the Square would appear on top of the Text Box – not so good.

This is an example of how layers can work for you or against you.  Hope that helps.
